Dutch Subtitle Generator

Add Dutch subtitles to any video automatically. Upload a video with Dutch or Flemish speech and get accurate, timed subtitles back with compound words, diphthongs and the ij written correctly.

Dutch video is full of English. Speakers switch mid-sentence, borrow whole phrases and pronounce brand names the English way, and the transcription follows that instead of trying to spell English words as if they were Dutch.

What makes Dutch subtitles different

Every language breaks in its own way. These are the parts that matter for Dutch.

Netherlands Dutch and Flemish

The soft g of Flanders and the hard g of Holland, je versus ge, and the vocabulary that differs between the two are all read from the audio. No region setting to pick.

English words stay English

Dutch speakers use English constantly, often for whole clauses. Those words are kept in their English spelling rather than being forced into a phonetic Dutch guess.

Compounds written as one word

Dutch joins words together — ondertitelgenerator, not ondertitel generator. Splitting them is the classic sign of an English-trained tool, and it is avoided here.

Spelling that follows the Groene Boekje

The ij, the diaeresis in words like reëel and coördinatie, and the tussen-n in compounds follow standard spelling, and anything you want changed is a click away in the editor.

How to add Dutch subtitles to a video

Upload, review, export. No timeline scrubbing and no timecodes typed by hand.

  1. 1

    Upload your video

Create your free account, then drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV or audio file containing Dutch speech. There is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Generate Dutch subtitles

The model transcribes the Dutch audio, keeps English words in their English spelling where the speaker used them, writes compounds as single words rather than splitting them, and times each line to the frame.

  3. 3

    Edit and export

Correct any names or terms in the editor, then download the video with Dutch subtitles burned in, or export a clean .srt or .vtt file.

Dutch, Flemish and the English in between

Dutch as it is spoken on video is rarely pure. A creator in Amsterdam will say "de content", "de vibe" and "even checken" in one breath, and a transcription model that has been told the audio is Dutch will try to spell every one of those the Dutch way. The result is a transcript nobody wrote and nobody wants. The model here treats the language switch as normal, because in Dutch it is.

Flanders adds a second layer. Flemish shares the written standard but differs in pronunciation, in a good deal of everyday vocabulary and in forms like ge and gij that a Dutch-trained model may never have heard. Both varieties are handled from the audio, so a video with speakers from Antwerp and Utrecht comes back consistent throughout.

The written details matter too. Dutch compounds are one word, the ij is two letters that behave as one, and the diaeresis marks where two vowels are sounded separately. None of it is difficult, but all of it is visible when it is wrong, and it is the kind of thing that decides whether a subtitle reads as Dutch or as a translation of Dutch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific to Dutch, not the generic list.

Does it work for Flemish as well as Netherlands Dutch?

Yes. Both are transcribed from the audio without a region setting, including Flemish pronunciation and vocabulary that differ from the Netherlands standard.

What happens to English words in a Dutch video?

They stay in English spelling. Code-switching is detected word by word, so "de content" is written exactly like that rather than as a phonetic Dutch spelling.

Are compound words written correctly?

Yes. Dutch compounds are written as one word, as standard spelling requires, and not split into the separate words an English-trained model would produce.

Can I export a Dutch SRT for YouTube or Vimeo?

Yes. Export a UTF-8 .srt or .vtt to upload as a subtitle track, or download the video with the Dutch subtitles burned in for social platforms.

Will I get English subtitles from a Dutch video?

Translated subtitle tracks are on the roadmap. The Dutch transcript is produced first so any translation starts from a corrected source.

Can I edit my captions before exporting?

Yes. Correct the transcript, adjust timings, choose a caption style and then export the finished video or a clean SRT or VTT file.
