Norwegian Subtitle Generator
Add Norwegian subtitles to any video automatically. Upload a video with Norwegian speech and get accurate, timed subtitles in Bokmål back with æ, ø and å written correctly.
Norway has two written standards, a great many spoken dialects and no single spoken norm. The transcription reads the dialect from the audio and writes clean Bokmål by default, with Nynorsk available on request.

What makes Norwegian subtitles different
Every language breaks in its own way. These are the parts that matter for Norwegian.
Dialect in, Bokmål out
Bergen, Trøndelag, Nord-Norge or Oslo — the spoken dialect is read from the audio and the transcript is written in standard Bokmål so the subtitles read consistently.
æ, ø and å
The three Norwegian letters are written correctly and exported as UTF-8, so they arrive intact in YouTube, VLC and your editor rather than as ae, o and a.
Compounds and English
Norwegian compounds stay as one word, and the English that Norwegian speakers use freely is kept in English spelling rather than being written phonetically.
Nynorsk if you need it
The transcript can be edited or exported in Nynorsk for audiences and regions where that is the expected standard.

Subtitling a language with no spoken standard
Norwegian is unusual: there is no official spoken standard, and people speak their dialect in every context, including on television and in video. A Trøndelag speaker and a Bergen speaker pronounce the same sentence very differently, use different pronouns, and may differ on the gender of a noun. Any subtitle tool that expects a single spoken norm is going to struggle with half the country.
The model here treats dialect as the normal case. It reads the audio for what was said, then writes it in standard Bokmål, which is what most Norwegian readers expect on screen regardless of how the speaker talks. That gives you a clean, consistent subtitle track even when three speakers in the same video come from three different regions.
Everything else is detail that still matters: the letters æ, ø and å exported so they survive, compounds written as single words, and the English that Norwegians use without thinking left in English. If your audience reads Nynorsk, the transcript can be converted or edited into it before export.

Frequently Asked Questions
Specific to Norwegian, not the generic list.
Does it handle Norwegian dialects?
Yes. Dialects from across Norway are transcribed from the audio and written in standard Bokmål, so the subtitle track reads consistently regardless of the speaker.
Can I get subtitles in Nynorsk instead of Bokmål?
Bokmål is the default. The transcript can be edited or exported in Nynorsk for regions and audiences where that is the expected standard.
Are æ, ø and å written and exported correctly?
Yes. They are written as the letters they are and exported as UTF-8 so they display correctly everywhere.
Can I export Norwegian subtitles as SRT?
Yes. Export a .srt or .vtt for YouTube, or download the video with Norwegian subtitles burned into the frame for Reels, Shorts and TikTok.
Can I get English subtitles from a Norwegian video?
Translated tracks are on the roadmap. The Norwegian transcript is produced first so a translation starts from a corrected source.
Can I edit my captions before exporting?
Yes. Correct the transcript, adjust timings, choose a caption style and then export the finished video or a clean SRT or VTT file.
