Tamil Subtitle Generator

Add Tamil subtitles to any video automatically. Upload a video with Tamil speech and get accurate, timed subtitles in Tamil script back in about a minute, with English words kept in English where the speaker used them.

Spoken Tamil and written Tamil are almost different languages, and most Tamil video is spoken Tamil full of English. The transcription follows the speaker, writes clean Tamil script, and does not force English words into Tamil letters.

What makes Tamil subtitles different

Every language breaks in its own way. These are the parts that matter for Tamil.

Spoken Tamil, not textbook Tamil

Pēccu tamiḻ — the everyday spoken form — drops and merges sounds that written Tamil keeps. The transcript writes what was said in a way a Tamil reader recognises, rather than forcing it into formal register.

English stays English

Tamil creators mix English constantly. Those words are kept in Latin script rather than being transliterated into Tamil letters that render them unreadable.

Chennai to Jaffna

Tamil Nadu regional accents and Sri Lankan Tamil are handled from the audio, with the vocabulary differences between them respected.

Script sized for a phone

Tamil letters are wide and round. Line lengths and caption boxes are set for the script so two lines stay inside a vertical frame, in fonts that render Tamil correctly.

How to add Tamil subtitles to a video

Upload, review, export. No timeline scrubbing and no timecodes typed by hand.

  1. 1

    Upload your video

Create your free account, then drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV or audio file containing Tamil speech. There is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Generate Tamil subtitles

The model transcribes the Tamil audio into Tamil script as spoken, keeps English words in Latin letters where they were used, and times each line to the frame. A Romanised export is available too.

  3. 3

    Edit and export

Correct any names or terms in the editor, then download the video with Tamil subtitles burned in, or export a clean .srt or .vtt file.

Tamil as it is actually spoken

Tamil is diglossic: the formal written language and the everyday spoken language differ in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to a degree that learners find startling. Almost all video is in spoken Tamil. A model trained mainly on written Tamil produces a transcript that is grammatically formal and audibly wrong, and a Tamil viewer sees the mismatch at once. The model here transcribes the spoken form as spoken.

English is the second half of most Tamil speech online. "Tanglish" is not slang, it is how the language is used, with English nouns, verbs and whole phrases embedded in Tamil sentences. Forcing those into Tamil script produces something nobody wrote. The transcript keeps English in Latin letters where the speaker used it, and Tamil in Tamil script, so the subtitle reads the way the audio sounds.

Region matters too. Tamil Nadu has distinct accents from Madurai to Coimbatore, and Sri Lankan Tamil differs in vocabulary and in preserving older pronunciations. All of it is handled from the audio, the export is UTF-8 so the script displays correctly, and the caption fonts have full Tamil coverage so burned-in text is complete on a phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific to Tamil, not the generic list.

Does it handle Tamil mixed with English?

Yes. English words and phrases are kept in Latin script where the speaker used them, and Tamil is written in Tamil script.

Does it write spoken Tamil or formal written Tamil?

Spoken Tamil, as said. Anything you want in a more formal register can be changed in the editor before exporting.

Does it handle Sri Lankan Tamil?

Yes. Sri Lankan Tamil and Tamil Nadu regional accents are transcribed from the audio, with their vocabulary differences respected.

Will Tamil script display correctly in the exported SRT?

Yes. Files are exported as UTF-8, and the caption styles use fonts with full Tamil coverage so no letter renders as a box.

Can I get English subtitles from a Tamil video?

Translated tracks are on the roadmap. The Tamil transcript comes first so a translation is made from a corrected source.

Can I edit my captions before exporting?

Yes. Correct the transcript, adjust timings, choose a caption style and then export the finished video or a clean SRT or VTT file.
