What makes Urdu subtitles different

Conversational Urdu and Hindi share most of their vocabulary, so script selection is a deliberate choice rather than something inferred from sound. Urdu video gets Urdu script.

Urdu script, Nastaliq and what players actually render
Urdu is written in the Nastaliq style, which slopes down from right to left and joins letters in ways that a plain Arabic Naskh font cannot reproduce. It is beautiful and it is genuinely difficult for software: a Nastaliq font needs far more contextual glyph shaping than most rendering engines were built to handle.
In practice that means the same correct .srt file can look right in one player and wrong in another, depending entirely on which font is available. Exports are UTF-8 with correct character sequences, so a player with a Nastaliq font such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu will render properly, and one without will fall back to Naskh — less elegant, still readable, which is far better than boxes. If you need the Nastaliq look guaranteed for every viewer, burn the captions into the video, where the shaping is baked into the picture.
Then there is the script question. Urdu speech and Hindi speech overlap enormously in casual conversation, so which script a transcript should use is not something a model can read from the audio — it is a decision about who is watching. Urdu script for a Pakistani or Urdu-literate audience, Roman Urdu for the very large group who read Latin script faster on a phone. Both come out of the same transcription.

How does it tell Urdu apart from Hindi?
In conversation it largely cannot, because the spoken languages overlap so heavily. Script is a choice you make rather than something detected from the audio, so an Urdu video produces Urdu script rather than Devanagari.
Can I get Roman Urdu instead of Urdu script?
Yes. Export transliterated Roman Urdu if that is what your audience reads more comfortably, which is common for Pakistani social video. It comes from the same transcription, so you can produce both.
What happens to English words in an Urdu sentence?
They stay in Latin script and run left-to-right inside the right-to-left line. Urdu speech carries a lot of English vocabulary, and forcing it into Urdu script phonetically makes it much harder to read.
Do right-to-left subtitles work on YouTube?
